Google Meet 2026: every new feature, and how to use it

Seven new features · which plan has each · get them sooner

Google has rebuilt Meet around what happens after the call. Every meeting now keeps its notes, its recording and its next steps in one place, and some of the work is done before you have closed the tab.

Since the summer, meet.google.com opens on a home page of your meetings, past and coming, with everything each one left behind. Gemini’s notes now capture what you share on screen, can start on their own, and work with no call at all, for a meeting across a table. And when a call ends, Meet offers to draft the follow-up email and put your next steps in Google Tasks. And since 22 October it translates what people say, live, in 63 languages.

This page goes with the video: every feature in the order of the tutorial, each with the steps to use it and the menus as Meet names them. The trailer above is the 90-second look; Watch tutorial has every click, speech translation included.

One thing first: not every plan has every feature. Gemini’s notes need Google AI Pro or Ultra on a personal account, or Business Standard or higher at work, and a few features are for work accounts only. The table below has each one. If your plan has a feature and you still cannot see it, it is still reaching you: the last part is how to get it sooner.

Which plan has which feature

Gemini’s notes follow the plan of whoever hosts the meeting: a guest on any account gets the notes without paying for anything.

Follow-ups after the call are for work accounts only, and Google does not list screenshots in the notes for personal plans. Enterprise plans have what Business Standard has; on Education, Gemini’s features come with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. An admin can turn any of them off. As Google’s help pages and update posts list them on 27 October 2026.

Feature 1 · The Meet home page

The new home page: every meeting, and everything it left behind

Available onevery Google account

Open meet.google.com and Meet no longer waits for a code. It shows your meetings by day and by week, straight from Google Calendar: the ones coming up with a Join button, and the ones that are over with everything they left behind.

Everyone invited sees the same meeting on their own home page, so nobody has to dig for the link. A meeting that is over carries its files as chips: Gemini’s notes, the recording, the transcript, the slides attached to it, and a video overview if someone made one.

How to

Join a meeting, or catch up on one you missed

  1. 1Go to meet.google.com. Today is open; pick another day in the week across the top, or press the calendar beside the date.
  2. 2To join, press Join on the meeting that is on now.
  3. 3To catch up, go to the day of the meeting and press Notes on its card: the summary, the decisions and the next steps, each with a name on it.
  4. 4If the meeting has a video overview chip, it plays the notes as a short video instead.

The notes are a Google Doc in three tabs: Quick notes, a one-page recap that is also what the email sends; Full notes, with the summary, the decisions, the next steps and the details; and Transcript, every word with its time. A blue time in the notes, like (00:02:24), jumps to that moment of the transcript.

Feature 2 · Video overviews

Too long to read? Turn the notes into a video

Available onGoogle AI Plus, Pro or UltraBusiness Starter or higher

The video overview on a meeting is not automatic: someone makes it, in Google Vids, from the notes. Docs to video reads a Google Doc, a Word file or a PDF, writes the script, picks the pictures and reads it out in a voice you choose. You press Create.

Two more steps put it on the meeting: share it, or people get a request for access instead of the video, and attach it to the event in Google Calendar, which is what puts it on everyone’s Meet home page.

How to

Make the video from the notes

  1. 1Type vids.new in the address bar.
  2. 2Press Docs to video (it is under File too), pick the meeting’s notes, then Next.
  3. 3Gemini writes the script and cuts it into scenes. Pick a voice, then press Create. It takes a minute or two.

How to

Share it, then attach it to the meeting

  1. 1In the video, change Restricted to your organisation, or to Anyone with the link for a client outside it.
  2. 2In Google Calendar, open the meeting and press Edit.
  3. 3In the description, press the Drive icon, pick the video and press Insert. Add the slides while you are there, then Save.

Feature 3 · In-person notes

In-person notes: Gemini takes notes with no call at all

Available onGoogle AI Pro or UltraBusiness Standard or higher

For a meeting across the table, or for talking your own ideas out: press one button, put the laptop or phone near whoever is speaking, and Gemini writes the summary, the next steps and a transcript with a time on every line, in a Google Doc in your Drive.

The button is on the Meet home page, at the top right, beside New. On a phone it is on the Meet app’s home screen.

How to

Take notes in person

  1. 1On meet.google.com, press In-person notes, then Start taking notes.
  2. 2Talk. Press pause for anything off the record, and again to carry on.
  3. 3When you are done, press the red button to stop, give the session a name, and press Save.
  4. 4A few minutes later it is on the home page under that name: Notes for the summary, the Transcript tab for every word.

The notes are an ordinary Google Doc, so you can ask Gemini about them right there: press the Gemini icon at the bottom of the doc. I talked through my next three videos for fifteen minutes, then asked for a plan:

Ask Gemini in the notes · 12 words

Turn these notes into a content plan for my next three videos.

Feature 4 · Gemini’s notes

Gemini’s notes now capture everything you share

Available onBusiness Standard or higher

When someone shares their screen, Gemini now takes a screenshot of what is shown and puts it into the notes, under the time it was on screen. A client shows you the error, a teammate walks through the numbers: afterwards it is all in the notes, picture included.

It is on by default, in the panel that opens from the pencil icon at the top of the call, under More settings.

How to

Start Gemini’s notes, screenshots included

  1. 1In the call, press the pencil icon at the top.
  2. 2Open More settings: Include screenshots of presented content is ticked. Untick it if you do not want them.
  3. 3Press Start taking notes. Everyone in the call sees that Gemini is taking notes.

Feature 5 · Automatic notes

Notes in every meeting, without pressing a thing

Available onGoogle AI Pro or UltraBusiness Standard or higher

Instead of pressing Start taking notes every time, tell Meet once: Gemini then starts the notes by itself in every meeting you host, or only in the ones with three or more guests.

If Gemini has lately started taking notes on its own and you did not know why, this is it: on Business Standard and Business Plus, Google turned on notes for meetings with three or more guests by default from 29 September. On a personal account with Google AI Pro or Ultra, the same setting turns notes on for all your calls.

How to

Turn on automatic notes

  1. 1On meet.google.com, press the settings cog at the top right. In a call, it is the three dots, then Settings.
  2. 2Open Meeting records.
  3. 3Under Automatic note taking for all future meetings, pick For all scheduled meetings I host, or For all scheduled meetings I host with 3+ guests, then press Save.

Feature 6 · After the call

After the call: the follow-up email and your next steps, done for you

Available onBusiness Standard or higher

Most of us close the tab the second a call ends. Do not: the screen after it now has Routines for this meeting. One press drafts the follow-up email in Gmail from Gemini’s notes; another adds your next steps to Google Tasks.

The screen only comes after an event in Google Calendar with at least one guest from outside your organisation. A quick meeting started from New, or a call with only your own team, ends without it. The routines run on Gemini’s notes, so the notes have to be on during the call, and when the draft is ready, Google Chat tells you, with a button that opens it.

How to

Run a routine

  1. 1Schedule the meeting in Google Calendar and invite someone outside your organisation: a quick meeting from New never gets the routines.
  2. 2Take notes with Gemini in the call, with Ask Gemini on. Hang up and stay on the screen that says You’ve left the meeting.
  3. 3Under Routines for this meeting, press Draft for the follow-up email, Add for your next steps.
  4. 4Open the draft from the Chat message, read it, and send it from Gmail. Your next steps are waiting in Google Tasks.

The routines themselves can only be turned on or off: they live in Workspace Studio, under Flows, marked system. To have the email sent instead of drafted, or to add a step after it, build a flow of your own. Everything else Studio can do is in my Workspace Studio guide, where the second flow turns a meeting into Jira tasks.

How to

Build your own: the follow-up sent, not drafted

  1. 1Go to studio.workspace.google.com and start a new flow.
  2. 2For the starter, pick When meeting outputs are ready, then Notes by Gemini.
  3. 3Add Ask Gemini, and ask it to write the follow-up email from the notes.
  4. 4Add Send an email, not Draft an email, with Gemini’s answer as the message.
  5. 5Add anything else, a post in Slack or a Jira issue, then turn the flow on.

Feature 7 · Speech translation

Speech translation: talk to anyone, in 63 languages

Available onGoogle AI Pro or UltraBusiness Standard or higher

Join a call in a language you do not understand and hear it in the one you do. Meet translates what people say out loud, as they say it, in 63 languages, and it works out which language is spoken on its own. A client can speak English when they can and switch to French when they get stuck, and you still understand them.

Nobody is translated without saying yes: until someone allows it, the badge on their video says Not translating. The 63 languages, any language to any other in the same call, arrived on 22 October; until then it was English paired with a handful of others. Work domains on Rapid Release have them now, everyone else from 2 November, over about two weeks: the last part is how to be first.

How to

Turn on speech translation

  1. 1In the call, press the captions and translation icon in the controls at the bottom, then Translate speech. Live captions are in the same menu.
  2. 2The button now says Translating to English, or to your language. To hear a different one, press the cog and pick it.
  3. 3Ask everyone else to allow it: at the top right of their video, they press Not translating, then Allow translation, then Translate me in the pop-up.
  4. 4Now they can speak their own language, and you hear it in yours. To stop, press Translating to English.

I tested it with two laptops in two rooms: a Spanish podcast played on one, and on the other it came through in English. It switched between the man’s and the woman’s voice as the speakers changed, and nobody had told it the podcast was in Spanish.

One more thing · The desktop app

Meet in its own window: the desktop app

Available onevery Google account

Not new, but worth it: Meet installs from Chrome as an app. It opens in its own window, with no address bar and no tabs to lose it in, sits in your dock or taskbar, and has every feature Meet has in the browser.

How to

Install it

  1. 1In Chrome, open meet.google.com and press Install at the right of the address bar.
  2. 2Meet opens in its own window, and its icon stays in your dock or taskbar.

Get it sooner · Google Admin console

Not on your account yet? How to get every feature sooner

Google rolls a feature out over weeks: first to work domains on Rapid Release, then, at least a week later, to everyone on the Scheduled release, and some features take more than 15 days to reach every account. If your plan has a feature in the table and you cannot see it, that is usually why.

A Workspace admin can move the domain to Rapid Release and switch everything on, at admin.google.com. Here is all of it, in order. Each change can take up to 24 hours.

In the Admin console

The first three bring new features soonest. The rest switch on everything this article shows.

  1. 1

    Rapid release

    Most important

Every new feature as soon as Google ships it, at least a week before the Scheduled release. It is for the whole organisation: it cannot be set for one unit or group.

    1. 1

      Find Release preferences

    2. 2

      Click New features

    3. 3

      Pick Rapid release

    4. 4

      Then Save

  2. 2

    Gemini Beta features

The Gemini features Google is still testing, before anyone else. It is all or nothing: you cannot pick features. Until July 2026 it was called Gemini Alpha.

    1. 1

      Click Gemini Beta features

    2. 2

Pick On, for everyone, or for the groups or units you choose at the left

    3. 3

Then follow the prompts on screen

  3. 3

    New products, on when released

New Google services switched on the day they launch, rather than waiting for you.

    1. 1

      Find Release preferences

    2. 2

      Click New products

    3. 3

      Pick Turned on when released

    4. 4

      Then Save

  4. 4

    Gemini in Meet

Notes, in-person notes, screenshots and automatic notes all sit here. The routines also need Ask Gemini, on the same page, and speech translation is here too, on by default.

    1. 1

Turn on Gemini features for Google Meet

    2. 2

Turn on Gemini note-taking: Let people use Gemini note-taking in meetings

    3. 3

Pick Visual content in notes: Always allow screenshots of presented content in notes

    4. 4

      Turn on Ask Gemini

    5. 5

      Then Save

  5. 5

    Recording and transcripts

The transcript gives the notes their times, and the recording sits on the home page beside them.

    1. 1

Turn on Recording: Let people record their meetings

    2. 2

      Turn on Meeting transcripts

    3. 3

      Then Save

  6. 6

    Google Vids

For the video overviews. Docs to video has no switch of its own.

    1. 1

      Pick On, for everyone

    2. 2

      Then Save

  7. 7

    Workspace Studio

The routines after the call are Studio flows, and so is anything you build.

    1. 1

      Click Service status

    2. 2

      Pick On for everyone

    3. 3

      Then Save

  8. 8

    Smart features

Gemini needs them. In the EU, the UK, Switzerland and Japan they start off. A super admin can set them on for everyone; each person can still change their own.

    1. 1

Pick Set a default, with smart features on

    2. 2

      Then Save

A personal account has no release track to change. Google’s only early access for one is Google Workspace Experiments, and in Meet it brings backgrounds and studio effects, not the notes. Leave it and you cannot join again. What a personal account does need is smart features: without them, Gemini’s notes cannot be turned on.

How to

On a personal account: turn on smart features

  1. 1In Gmail, open Settings, then See all settings, on the General tab.
  2. 2At Smart features, tick Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
  3. 3At Google Workspace smart features, press Manage Workspace smart feature settings, turn on Smart features in Google Workspace, then Save.
